HISTORY
In 1969, a group of lovely MERMAIDS gathered together to
glamorize International Diving School's skin & scuba
diving demonstrations at the Hawai‘i Kai Rec Center. Then,
Bill Edwards wanted an underwater ballet for Cec Heftel at
the Rodeway Inn, which became the Hawaiian Inn, then
Hawai‘i Dynasty, & now is the Holiday Inn Waikïkï.
Wintertime 1971 came, MERMAIDS HAWAI‘I was formed &
presented our 1st Annual Christmas Water Show of surface
synchronized swimming at the Hawaiian Inn. The underwater
ballet was continued at the Outrigger Hotel & with the
U.S. Navy's diving equipment demonstrations for Hale‘iwa
Sea Spree, Pearl Harbor Youth Carnival, Armed Forces Day,
50th State Fair, and 4th of July. Imua Hawai‘i saw the
mermaids swimming for Hawaiian Inn parties & created
the "Mermaid Luau" at Sea Life Park around us.
Home-pooled now at the Windward YMCA, after 31 years at the
Holiday Inn Waikïkï; we've swum at the Rehabilitation
Hospital of the Pacific; Shriners Hospital for Crippled
Children; Kahi Mohala, Hawai‘i School for the Deaf &
Blind; Muscular Dystrophy and Easter Seals Camps; Kaiser
High , Kalani High ; Pöhai Nani, Arcadia Retirement
Residence, Hawaii Kai Retirement Community, & One
Kalakaua Senior Living; Kukui Plaza; Queen Lili‘uokalani
Gardens, Richards Street O’ahu YWCA; Armed Forces, Leeward,
Mililani, Nu‘uanu & Windward YMCAs. Hotels include the
Hilton Hawaiian Village (Ocean & Rainbow Towers, Super
Pool & off their Catamaran), ‘Ilikai, Imperial Hawai‘i,
Hotel Miramar Hawai‘i, Kuilima, Princess Ka‘iulani, Ala
Moana Americana, Waiohai (Kaua‘i), Maui Marriott, Sheratons
(Waikïkï, Kaua‘i, Waikoloa, and Moloka‘i), Maui Embassy
Suites, & 3 different Waikïkï Holiday Inns.
Other performances have been at the Makani Kai Yacht
Center, Waikïkï Yacht Club, Elks Club, Honolulu
International Country Club, and O‘ahu Country Club;
Makalapa Pool (Navy), Fort Shafter Officers Club (Army), Ye
Olde World Faire, Honolulu Zoo {Tiger Pool & Alligator
River}, Waikïkï Aquarium {Seal Pool}; Mänoa, Mililani,
Waipahu, Kailua, & Foster Village Recreation Centers;
Century 21 Open Houses; Hale‘iwa Harbor; Sans Souci and
Queens Beach; Ala Moana and Diamond Head Beach Parks;
Hawai‘i School For Girls, Boy Scouts of America, Hawai‘i
Maritime Center, Aloha Tower Fountain, Royal Hawaiian
Shopping Center Waterfall, & under the Glass Bottom
Boat. Also, shows have been adapted for many private homes
& condominiums, both here & on the mainland.
Our repertoire includes numerous routines choreographed to
many kinds of music. Given enough time, we can create
"something special". So, if you, or someone you know, would
